The Underground isn’t just a catchy name — it is actually located in the basement of the Teachout
Building. The space was the home of the East Des Moines Club in the 1970s. The Underground has a
sexy vibe, lighting is minimal, Red lights shine on exposed Brick Walls, and mini spotlights shine on walking paths, not the booths themselves. A simple black bar is the centerpiece of the main area, off to the side is a room with two pool tables, steel-tipped darts and video games. The few TVs the Underground has are dedicated to old kung fu movies. The bar has a special tucked away shot closet. Some bars have 100 martinis the Underground will have every shot you could ever want. Reprints of historical photographs of Des Moines decorate the seating area. The most eye-catching statement in The Underground is a large stained glass window created in the 1920s. Juxtaposed
against the Tiffany-style glass mural are paintings by local artists.
